What Does it Take to Turn an Unexpected Detour Into a New Direction?

For me, it took a car accident, a challenging photoshoot, and a lot of learning.
After a long break from photography, I realized I needed a new way forward, because the approach I was taking wasn’t sustainable. This new direction led to changes that included a decision to focus on high school senior photography.
My first big step? A destination senior session with my nephew at his favorite place on earth.

A Challenge Worth Taking

This wasn’t your typical photoshoot. I had to comply with park rules: no heavy gear, no artificial lighting, and no photographing other guests. Add to that the fact I hadn’t been to the park since I was a kid. It was a lot to abide by, but I was up to the challenge.
I decided to use a wide-angle lens to really capture the park’s magic, its atmosphere, all of it. That also meant I had to get creative about how to address the people in the background. It was tricky, but it pushed me to be improvisational and embrace the unexpected, which is where the best ideas come from.

Learning to Adapt

Life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans. My car accident and photography reaffirm that idea. Those experiences have taught me when to stand my ground, when to yield, and—most importantly—that my ego has no place in either. This photoshoot was different. Its challenges reminded me of what I’m still capable of, even with new limits.
I also leaned into tools I’d been hesitant to use before, like AI. It helped me clean up the images by removing background distractions and fixing low-light issues. For someone who usually likes to get everything perfect in-camera, this was out of my comfort zone—but it taught me that tools don’t replace creativity. They just make what’s already there even better.

Problems Are My Friend

This day wasn’t just about taking photos of my nephew. I enjoyed the challenge of problem solving, and the spontaneity that the day provided.
Every session I shoot is different because every person is different. You’ve got your own vibe, your own story, and your own point of view. For me, the best part of photography is figuring out how to bring all of that into frame.

So, What’s Your Story?

Photography isn’t just about capturing a moment; it’s about understanding the person in front of the camera and creating something that truly represents them. If that sounds like what you’re looking for, I’d like to explore that with you.
Whether we’re designing a session that fits your personality, or figuring out what kind of photos mean the most to you, I’m here to help make it all come together.
